Curriculum

WDS curriculum is carefully aligned with Connecticut's Common Core Standards. Our curriculum is individually prescribed for each student taking into account strengths, weaknesses, interests, and educational goals. We change the way our students relate to and participate in their own education. Fostering a strong educational alliance between students and their teachers, which is highly motivating.

Classrooms

Our 6-week Extended School Year Program is held, Monday through Thursday, 9am - 1pm and is perfect for the continuation of educational services, intensive work on IEP goals and objectives, and for earning high school credit. 

Our class sizes average from 2-8 students, making each class small enough to be therapeutic yet large enough to promote collaboration. We provide a daily art class as well as a daily Movement & Mindfulness class. In addition, we've infused social thinking (Michelle Garcia-Winner) within all of our activities and classes.

Our learning integrates the use laptops, digital applications, and online curriculum including exposure to Adobe & Microsoft applications. Digital curriculum such as Discovery Education digital techbook and Adaptive Curriculum are also utilized.

Assessment & Reports

As an approved private special education program, WDS participates in administering all state mandated testing each spring. This includes Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment for Grades 6-8, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for Grade 11 & Connecticut SAT School Day.

Professional Development

At WDS, the collaboration of teachers, counselors & staff serves as  a foundational framework for positive student outcomes. Our team participates in weekly professional development on topics related to academic achievement, social emotional success, and personal self-care and development.
